Bali Street Kids Project
Location: Bali, Indonesia
Synopsis: The Bali Street Kids Project functions as a holistic safe-haven for more than 25 children and teens who live in some of Bali’s worst slums. This project provides a caring home and orphanage to these disadvantaged children, while also providing them with opportunities to learn reading and math skills at an informal school taught on the beach. Additionally, this project works to create more AIDS awareness and abuse prevention in a community where many children face futures as sex workers, beggars, or worse.
Burmese Refugee Project
Location: Bali, Thailand
Synopsis: Using participatory models of community development among Shan Burmese refugees living in northwest Thailand, we have been working for over a decade in on-the-ground initiatives in education, mental and reproductive health, water, and legal rights. By building a well-educated, healthy, and economically robust community, we restore dignity, assert social rights, and help lay the foundations for their participation in a future democratic Burma.
